Josef demian
Director-dOP-SCREENWRITER
One of the figure heads of the 70’s New Wave, makes his mark on Romanian cinema as cinematographer with masterpieces such as Stone Wedding or Lust of Gold.
Moving to directing, he excels with his first independent, innovative A maiden tear, (Official selection Cannes Festival, Un certain regard 1982). Highly successful films follow – Rainbow bubbles, To kill a bird of prey, etc. Banned by communist censorship, Demian is forced to leave his country. He settles in Australia in 1986.

PICIU – The KID at TIFF 2023
Josef Demian’s last movie shot before he left Romania in 1984 can be seen at TIFF 2023.
A group of pioneers is spending the summer holiday in the wild. At the center of all the adventures seems to be the Kid, a little boy whose courage is matched only by his cleverness. This popular film (one million admissions in the year of release) will be screened in honor of actor Horaţiu Mălăele, the recipient of the Excellence Award at TIFF 2023!
The viewers will have the opportunity to see, for the first time, the uncensored ending of this film. Director Iosif Demian has obtained the final sequence, that was originally censored by the communist regime.
3×3: Iosif Demian
Iosif Demian, one of the most important Romanian filmmakers, started out as a director of photography for Mircea Veroiu and Dan Pița’s Stone Wedding (1972) and made his debut with Calamity (1977), co-directed with Andrei Blaier. His 1980 debut film as a director, A Girl’s Tear, was selected in the Un Certain Regard section at the 1982 Cannes film festival. It will be included in this year’s mini-retrospective alongside a restored Rainbow Bubbles (1982), whose history was profoundly marked by Communist censorship. Finally, Demian’s latest film Night Patrol will have its world premiere at TIFF this year.
